As many as 47 artists and culture figures declared that they would like to take part in the Auction for Malta Festival. The reaction to the idea of Mariusz Wilczyński – a renowned Polish animator and drawer – has exceeded our expectations. We receive information about donated paintings, sculptures, books, awards, photos and many other valuable items everyday. All this to support Malta Festival Poznań 2017.

The idea for the Auction was conceived following the statements made by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Professor Piotr Gliński, who declared in the media that Malta will not receive the subsidy it is entitled to under a contract signed last year. So far, the ministry has not made an official statement regarding that matter. Therefore, we hope that they will meet their end of the agreement before the launch of the Festival. In this uncertain situation every gesture of solidarity mobilises us to power through.

During the Warsaw press conference Mariusz Wilk Wilczyński donated a work created especially for this occasion. It is entitled “Let the dogs bark, the caravan moves on”. A day later the President of Poznań, Jacek Jaśkowiak, donated to Michał Merczyński, the director of the Festival, a graphic with an inscription “Free city of Poznań”, which he received from his collaborators.

More submissions followed shortly. So far participation in the auction has been confirmed by:

A film award was also donated by the famous director Agnieszka Holland. During the auction you will also get the chance to bid for a fragment of the musical score to „The Magic Mountain” by Paweł Mykietyn, an album by Wacław Zimpel, a signed copy of the recently published Diary 2000-2002” by Krystyna Janda, as well as a copy of „Streetcar Named Desire” signed by the author of the translation, Jacek Poniedziałek. There will be real treats for cinema lovers as well. The curator of last year’s idiom Lotte van den Berg donated the chairs from the ‘Building Conversation’ project based around the idea of a conversation as a work of art. We’ve also received rare albums with photographs of directors – guests of the T-Mobile Nowe Horyzonty film festival, box sets and books about films from Roman Gutek, as well as VHS tapes with rare footage of Grzegorz Jarzyna debut, Tropical Madness” in unique graphic design. The director also donated the original theatre program for the play with the author’s inscription as well as a limited edition issue of the Notatnik Teatralny magazine celebrating the 20th anniversary of „Tropical Madness”. Beata Stasińska donated a photograph of Zbigniew Herbert from the student strikes of 1981, as well as an original framed cut-out by Czesława Kaczyńska, one of the last folk-artists to continue this fading folk-Jewish tradition. These are only some of the objects at the auction.

The solidarity expressed by the members of the international project House on Fire is very important for Malta. The aim of the project is to support artists who take a stance in the public debate about current social, cultural and economic issues. The representatives of House on Fire have declared the situation of the festival “very alarming”. Expressions of support were sent in by: Mark Deputter, Laura Lopes, Ondrej Hrab, Jan Veselý, Sven Åge Birkeland, Karoline Skuseth, Kira Kirsch, Mark Timmer, Guy Gypens, Ilse Joliet, Jacky Ohayon, Stéphane Boitel, Annemie Vanackere, Ricardo Carmona, Jon Davis oraz Mark Ball.
